Lauren Trager of KMOV and Sarah Fenton of KWMU fielded questioned about their careers as investigative journalists from SLU newswriting students on Thursday, February 13th.

At a time when the media is under attack in the United States, Trager and Fenton were questioned on the pressures they’re under. Trager said “Press plays a pivotal role in a free democracy where people are informed.”

Both reporters had a non-traditional route to where they are now in their careers, demonstrating that there is more than one singular track to success. Although they work in different mediums, they deal with similar experiences of public backlash, competitiveness, and the need for tenacity. Both stated that journalism is an economically precarious job and advised against going into the field unless there is absolute certainty it is the job for those seeking it.
